At Richmond Ford West, we get a lot of questions from our friends in the Glen Allen, Ashland, and Short Pump area about Ford technology and features found in our expansive inventory of Ford models. Most commonly, drivers have asked us about the Ford SYNC® technology and how it enhances the driving experience. This feature acts as the command center for your vehicle systems, your communications, and your entertainment.Â
We'll gladly go over the SYNC® technology system and its versions. We'll go in-depth with this intuitive system to provide you with the necessary information so you can understand what the SYNC® feature does for you and your driving. This feature will change the way you look at normal driving.
Ford SYNC® History
The SYNC system was first introduced in 2007 as a partnership between Ford and Microsoft. Using the latest Microsoft technology, the SYNC system was created to provide an extra layer of convenience for drivers by allowing them to remain connected through their smartphones and their digital media players. It was made available as a standalone feature, but soon worked its way as part of the vehicle purchase through certain models and trims in 2011.
SYNC® Technology
The entry level SYNC® technology system was a major convenience for drivers when it became a standard feature. The system included a USB port and an auxiliary input that allowed drivers to connect their external media devices. The system was then utilized to allow the driver to choose their media or phone contacts through the screen. The SYNC® Basic system features:
- An LCD screen for viewing stations/track names, text entries, and caller ID
- Voice-activated Bluetooth® phone communication
- Text message delivery and out loud reading
SYNC® with MyFord
The SYNC® with MyFord was the first update to the Ford SYNC® technology system. This system added a lot of new media and convenience features to the mix. The SYNC® with MyFord comes with:
- A 4.2-inch touchscreen display
- HD Radio® and a six-month trial of SirusXM® Satellite Radio
- Voice-activated radio tuning
- Optional voice-activated navigation
SYNC® 3
SYNC® 3 is the latest iteration of the SYNC® technology. It adds a whole new set of features and capabilities for drivers to utilize on their journey. SYNC®3 was designed using Blackberry Limited technology as opposed to Microsoft. The updates to the system added a quicker response when accessing the screen along with more in-depth smartphone integration to keep the driver connected at all times, no matter how far from home. SYNC® 3 includes:Â
- An eight-inch high-resolution touchscreen display
- Siri® Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay®, and Android Auto®
- SYNC® Connect, allowing access to vehicle features and information like fuel level, location, and even start, lock, and unlock capabilities.
- Available Navigation with SiriusXM® Traffic & Travel Link
