When you think of the city of Detroit, the first thing that comes to mind may not be lush green farmland like you'll find in the outskirts of the Glen Allen, Richmond, Midlothian, and Ashland area. Yet a small, 4.5-acre farm in Ford Motor Company's home city grows about 20,000 servings of corn each year for Detroit Public School (DPS) cafeteria lunches.
"A hungry child can't learn," explains Zaundra Wimberley, Farm and Garden Program Director for DPS. "Learning, and what you eat, and nutrition is all tied together."
With a fleet of Ford commercial vehicles helping with the volunteer and farm work, DPS students are not only getting nutritious lunches to help them focus better in class, they are also able to get out into the garden as part of their academic curriculum. The school gardens allow students to design and conduct botanical experiments with their science teachers, and eat the results!
"Ford and Detroit are synonymous with tough," Wimberley says. "The F-150 is a tough truck, and Detroiters are tough, resilient people."
